Nine Egyptian human rights organizations in a joint statement on Friday called on the International Committee of the Red Cross to inspect Egyptian prison conditions. They expressed their growing concern over the increase in the number of deaths of those in prison since the beginning of this year due to the policy of depriving prisoners of proper medical care, worsening medical negligence of those sick and old, and the growing insistence to not allow covers and thick clothing in the bitter cold. These charges are in addition to other inhumane practices, degrading treatment, and torture, which have pushed those detained to go on hunger strike in protest. The organizations confirmed that the deaths of at least three prisoners in one week in three different prisons serves as a warning for hundreds of those imprisoned whose calls for help have not reached the outside world.
