Summary:
This report is on the formation of the Egyptian Constitution of 2012 was commissioned by the German organization Missio which has translated this in German for publication in Germany.
The report describes the processes of how the Constituent Assembly was formed and discussions about the content of this Constitution from both liberal and Islamist perspectives. The main authors of this text, Diana Serodio and Jayson Casper, have interviewed many Egyptians who had been deeply involved in the discussions and the Constituent Assembly. It is a major piece of work with details that are, to our knowledge, is nowhere else available in English.
The debates on the Constitution lie at the core of the disputes between Islamists and non-Islamists since the Constitution outline the identity of the state. Understanding the debates in 2012 is thus a prerequisite for understanding the discussions taking place now in revising the Constitution.
