Saif Daif Allāh writes:Before the January 2011 Revolution, the Salafis in Egypt were the only religious group that strongly supported the regime of ousted President Hosni Mubarak. Their perception at that time was that they denied themselves all political activities, claiming being scholars who solely seek knowledge. The implicit agreement between them and Mubarak system was “Let him govern and let us preach our Da'wa” (Call). So they served as honorary members of the National Democratic Party, giving the regime a doubled religious legitimacy, the one being already granted by Al-Azhar.
