Female reporter and her child break a story about working women in Egypt
A picture of a female journalist, Lamīa Hamadīn, in Egypt conducting an interview while holding her son has resulted in a strong show of support on social media sites. The initial debate spawned by the photo has expanded to a discussion of women’s rights in Egypt and calls for legislation protecting these rights. The picture was originally taken by another journalist, Muhamad ‘Abd al-Nāsr, who happened to be passing by when he saw Lamīa with her son. After only one hour, negative comments were posted below the picture, but Lamīa responded by saying that her son was very sick and she could not leave him in the street. Criticism of Lamīa has focused on work place prejudice; however there has also been criticism of Muhamad ‘Abd al-Nāsr, inspiring him to issue a formal apology.
