Egypt: The Supreme Administrative Court criminalizes issuing fatwas by non-scholars

The Supreme Administrative Court delivered a final ruling that prohibits an ʾimām from delivering the sermon (Khuṭba) from the pulpits (al-Minbar) or delivering fatwās on social media, because of his extremism that goes against moderate teachings of Islam.

Shaykh Jābir Ṭāyiʿ, head of the religious sector, stated that the Awqāf Ministry (Religious Endowments) sets some conditions for preachers who use the pulpits [minbar]. These conditions include being an Azharian (al-Azhar graduate) or holding a license from the Ministry of al-Awqāf.
