Among all the ultra-orthodox Muslim organizations, the one that seemed most likely to take over many of the countries involved in the Arab Spring was the Muslim Brotherhood, due to its lengthy history and organizational skills. Indeed, the Brotherhood succeeded in taking over two of the original Arab Spring countries, Tunisia and Egypt, through relatively honest elections. It also dominated Hamas-controlled Gaza and was looked upon benignly by Washington and Brussels at the beginning of the year. Now, months later, the Brotherhood lies in tatters.
