The GCC made it clear that it supports Egypt’s fight against terrorism and seeks to reconcile differences between the country and Qatar. However, with the death of King ʿAbd Allah and his succession by King Salmān, the Muslim Brotherhood expressed hope for better relations with the kingdom. However, Saudi efforts to improve terms with the Brotherhood seem rather strategic and serve countering the growing Iranian clout in the region. Seeking to form a unified force and thereby strengthening its political influence, the council is willing to cooperate with the brotherhood. The internal transformation of the council is embraced by the brotherhood since it would give them political leverage on a domestic level. Yet, the increasing isolation and radicalization of the Brotherhood’s leadership in Egypt could undermine such developments.
