On May 10, the Roman Catholic and Coptic Orthodox Churches are celebrating the Day of Fraternal Love, which is an annual meeting between the two churches. Pope Tawāḍrūs II of the Coptic Orthodox Church will embark on a three-day visit to the Vatican from 10 to 14 May as he is scheduled to meet with Pope Francis of the Roman Catholic Church. The visit will mark 10 years since the establishment of the Day of Fraternal Love, and 50 years of relations between the two churches since Pope Shinūda III met for the first time with Pope Paul VI. Media representatives from the Catholic Church stated that the public reception of Pope Tawāḍrūs II will take place on May 10 at Saint Peter’s Square. There, the Patriarch of the Saint Mark Diocese, along with Pope Francis, will deliver a speech on the occasion and lead a mass in Rome. Pope Tawāḍrūs is also scheduled to offer an Orthodox Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning, May 14, at Saint John Lateran Basilica, for which thousands of Copts residing in Rome will be in attendance. Father Martin Browne, an official at the Vatican Dicastery for Promoting Christian Unity, said the Divine Liturgy will take place within the context of the Coptic Orthodox Patriarch’s official visit from Alexandria to the Vatican.
