Speaking in an interview, Pope Tawadros said “we will not accept civil marriage in exchange for marriage in the church, in accordance with Coptic Personal Status Laws.” He added that even though the state accepts it, the church would never approve it. He also spoke about elections inside the church saying that 1,500 people participated in the most recent elections compared to only 700 in the previous election. In the coming election, he said, ten thousand people are expected to participate from all parts of society.
