Background:
Southern Sudanese students situated in Egypt were interviewed by Cornelis Hulsman regarding the budget cuts of scholarships by the government in Sudan. The students, clearly dealing with serious issues, went to the Catholic Church in Egypt to ask for financial support. Furthermore, the recording displays a speech regarding the 125th anniversary of the nationalisation of the Suez Canal in Egypt.
Side A:
In 1992, Sudanese Bishop al-Zubaīr came to Egypt to pay the Sudanese community a visit. Bishop al-Zubaīr asked the Catholic Church in Egypt for financial support. At the time, the church sent a description of the funding project to the German and Norwegian government who responded by helping the bishop. However, this support quickly ended as the bishop no longer had the funds in order to continue helping the students. While initially, the students received 150 Sudanese pounds per month from the bishop’s committee, this had later been reduced to 80, and finally, put to an end completely.
The rest of the recording deals with the celebration of the 125th anniversary of the nationalisation of the Suez Canal, whereby a speech is given at an FPA Press Conference. The speech praises the many accomplishments and result of the Suez Canal nationalisation.
Side B:
Two sound bites are presented of the Southern Sudanese students and their opinions regarding the budget cutting of their scholarships.
