Significant controversy was triggered by Maī ʿAbdullāh, a first-division student of the Faculty of Dentistry at Sinai University, after she posted through a leaflet on her personal account directing insults at the Prophet Muḥammad, and mocking heaven and the ḥijāb.
In her post, Maī said: “I believe in God, praise be to Him, but I do not believe in Muḥammad. If Muḥammad would bring me to a paradise of prostitution and wine, I would not want to enter it.” She added: “As a girl, I’d find myself ashamed to enter your paradise in the first place.” She also ridiculed the veil, saying, “As for the ḥijāb, I am wearing it because this backward society has forced me to wear it.”
Sinai University’s first urgent reaction was to announce the opening of an immediate investigation into the student. The university mentioned that, with reference to what had been circulating recently on social media and attributed to the student, the university’s administration has decided to refer the incident for an urgent investigation. University sources revealed that the investigation is underway and that the outcome of the investigation will be officially announced by the University following its completion.
