The strangling of civil society in Egypt deepens

Targeting NGOs, President ‘Abd al-Fattāh al-Sīsī signed several new laws including measures to monitor and weaken civil society in Egypt. The new laws require many organizations to re-register in order to continue operating, meaning that many will be unable to continue conducting their operations in the country. As much as 7% of the NGOs currently operating in Egypt are expected to leave the country as a result.
