Background:

On April 15, 1995, a train collided with a bus in the town Quwīsnā in the Minūfiya governorate in Egypt. A group of factory workers were severely injured, some even killed. Train wreckages as these are not incidents that happen from time to time, but in fact illustrations of the poor facilities in Egypt. Cornelis Hulsman travels to the village and interviews the (families of the) victims of the train wreckage.

A bus was stuck in traffic in the town Quwīsnā, where traffic jams as such are not uncommon. The bus was full with workers who were on their way to the factory. The problem, however, was that the bus was stuck in traffic whilst simultaneously standing on the railway tracks. The train approached without the knowledge of the bus being there. The caution signals were defected, which led the train to pursue its trip without stopping. The bus could not move due to the traffic jam, and the train was unaware of its existence, which is when the collision happened.

In a conversation with Cornelis Hulsman, Hulsman argued that the traffic jams and combination with the defected caution signals are examples of the poor facilities in Egyptian society. The poorer areas are not maintained as much as the areas where richer people live. He further concluded that this occurrence is not uncommon and affects primarily those who are on the bottom of the society.
