Several weeks ago we received an important academic recognition of the Data Archiving and Networked Services (DANS) resulting in a vacancy for academic database entry. We still have a vacancy for research assistant for which you can apply. And if this position is not for you please pass it on to others who might be interested.

DANS gave the following description of this project:

Description and classification of content of Arab-West Report in preparation for depositing in the archive of DANS. Preparation for data storage of thousands of articles and reports that have been deposited in the self-built Arab-West Report, resulting from 20 years of research and documentation of Dutch sociologist Cornelis Hulsman and his co-workers and students on pluralism in Egypt.

The amount of work is substantial and we still need, as soon as possible, an additional person who can help us with data entry. You need to have a good general knowledge of the subjects we cover; Muslim-Christian relations in contemporary Egypt because only then would you be able to classify the data in the right fields and assist interns in doing so as well. The work entails a lot of reading of interesting material and great attention to details. Most data are in English but knowing (some) Arabic is definitely an advantage, since you could then learn the IJMES transliteration system of Arabic names, which will help in placing transliterated Arabic names in the database. Work is full-time, 40 hours per week. We are paying 21.000 EgP (net) for completing a six month period. This position will also strengthen your academic credentials. The second vacancy concerns urgently needed native English speaking teachers of English in Port Said, a beautiful Egyptian city on the Mediterranean sea. These are vacancies of the PLC Center which belongs to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Port Said. The center serves the entire community, Muslims and Christians. The purpose of the center is to educate Egyptian youth to acquire a good level of English and develop personal skills to enable them to compete with job market requirements. Since youth unemployment is so large in Egypt, this is a tremendously important service. The Center also offers summer courses between May and September for children to raise their language proficiency. Besides this the Center runs an English club for children, offering them assistance to practice their English through songs, games and one to one conversations. The Center pays around 4800-5000 EgP monthly and takes care of good accommodation. If you are interested please write an email with motivation to Mdm Laurice Louis at [email protected] or call 01227901838 for an appointment.

Both positions need to be filled immediately. The PLV Center are friends of Arab-West Report and of course we hope that teachers will write about their unique experiences in Port Said for Arab-West Report as well.
