Dear AWR-User,

hello and welcome !!

We at AWR (Arab West Report) have been working hard to present our content in a new up-to-date system.

This article wants to

• inform you about the changes (also what it means for your subscription)
• help you get accustomed to the new system

The new AWR features

• much better search of articles through Google Custom Search
• easy switching from Arabic to English and vice versa (please be aware not all articles are avialable in English !!)
• easy access to different levels / interests of users (Pres summaries / Media Critique
• extensive tagging and indexing (only for users who have logged in with their account)
• more up-to-date (backlog less than one day usually)

You will find a short FAQ at the end of the article.

We will now explain the various parts of the main window

This is what you see in the upper part now (maybe with a different layout):

The areas are:

1. The "Google Custom Search" - Use this to quickly search articles
2. Language Switcher English / Arabic - Use this to switch website to Arabic / English or vice versa
3. Main Menu - Use this to navigate our website
4. Archive Last 4 Years Block - Use this to access older articles by year / week and article number
5. Press Summaries Block - Displays the Daily Press Summaries
6. AWR-Analysis-Block - Displays articles with deeper background analysis
7. Archive Recent 10 Weeks Block - Use this for quick access to recent weeks

8. The login window - Use this to login with username and password.

9. Create new account link - Use this if you haven't got an account yet.

10. Request new password link - Use this if you forgot your password

11. Facebook connect button - Use this if you have a facebook account

12. Media Critique Block - Displays articles of text type Media Critique

The following depends on if you are

• a visitor (anonymous user) you have access to articles only
• a registered user  with login (registered users have full access to our extensive search tools)

For details on the privileges please see subscriptions

Let's assume you are a registered user with a login and a password.

So first login with your username and password

Now you can browse through the articles of the present week by clicking on the article title. Depending on your privileges you will see the summary and the fulltext of the article as shown here.

Note that you can navigate forward  (>)  and backward (<)  to the previous and following article by clicking on the links above or below the article.

Articles fo the recent 10 weeks can be accessed in the same way by using the links under Recent weeks in the right pane lower area.

You can search for any term through the search in the Google Custom Search window. It will suggest certain terms it has found which are similar.

If you have advanced search requirements you might also want to try the advanced search or the "Search database" menu.

A warning on transliteration

Many names in our database use transliterated characters like Ā, Ī, or Ū

These can not normally be input by the keyboard and can only be searched successfully by using their html-equivalents which are

• &#256 for Ā, &#257 for ā
• &#298 for Ī, &#299 for ī
• &#362 for Ū, &#363 for  ū

Short FAQ (Frequently asked Questions)

• Q: I forgot my password. How can I get a new password ?
  • A: Click on the link under the login window titled "request new password"
• Q: I haven't got a login yet. How do I get one ?
  • A: Click on the link under the login window titled  "Create account" . Fill in the necessary information and submit the form. You will be mailed a confirmation with a link to the email-adress you entered. Click on that link to activate your subscription. Important: Without this confirmation step you will not be able to use your login !!
• Q: I don't need my subscription any more. Where can I terminate that ?
  • A: Use the form under Contact us and select Subscription to inform us about your wish. The help-desk will delete your account.
• Q: can I pay my subscription by PayPal ?
  • A: Yes, use the subscription by PayPal link under subscriptions
