Sheik elSha’arawy attacked the sheik of the Azhar and the mufti of Egypt,

saying they were violating

basic principles of Islam. Sha’arawy said that God’s word in the Holy Qur’an

should be taken

literally and if the verses of the Holy Qur’an were clear, they did not need to be thought

over.
The

author, however, disagrees with the sheik and says that many contemporary questions did not

exist at the time of

the Prophet Mohammed, and therefore, it is not a simple matter of applying verses. The

author also criticizes the

sheik because he attacks two prominent religious leaders in Islam. Finally the

author says that elSha’arawy is

not consistent in his statements on cloning, and ridicules his view on

female circumcision, and his belief that

Egypt should lose Western aid and depend on God alone to win the

struggle with Israel.
