El-Ahali looks back to the days after the revolution of 1919 when Copts had prominence in Egypt’s public life. El-Ahali, mouth piece of the Tagammu Party, prides itself in having the best characteristics of the liberal age of that period. Today, however, there is a segregation in society. Copts are pushed back out of public life. El-Ahali calls the Hamayouni law, which limits the building and repair of churches, embarrassing. During Nasser thousands of Copts emigrated who had lost their economic basis in Egypt. After Sadat took power in 1970 the Islamist movement grew strong which he tried to use for his own benefit. The Islamists killed many Copts. The paper than refers to Dr. Milad Hanna, an Egyptian nationalist and Copt, who even used the term ’second class citizen’. Copts should be given equal rights because that will reverse their present negativity about contributing to Egypt. Citizens should be treated equally, no matter what their religion is. El-Ahali therefore rejects a division on a sectarian basis such as in Lebanon.
