Following the outbreak of the H1N1-virus which spread from

Mexico in April 2009 the Egyptian president Mubārak and the Egyptian parliament decided to slaughter all 300.000 –

350.000 pigs in Egypt. On May 7 and 13 CIDT sent a team of researchers to the area of Muqattam, also known as ’garbage

city’, located just North-East of Cairo, to find out what impact the matter has had and will have on the pig farmers and

people in the area.
