In an interview with Nahdat Misr, the head of the fatwá committee at the Azhar, Marzūq Al-Shahāt Marzūq, warned against the dangers of the currently prevailing extremism in religious thought and criticized Muslims for turning to satellite channels to learn about religion instead of the Azhar. He denied claims of Kāmīliyā Shihātah going to the Azhar to officially convert to Islam, and said that the authorities do not tell the Azhar what to do.
