Many considered Bishop Bīshūy’s absence from the Pope's weekly sermon an indicator of the severity of the conflict between the two. An unnamed bishop informed the paper of threats of "severe punishment" made to the church in response to Bīshūy’s comments. Activist Boulos Ramzī protested alone outside the Attorney General's office, demanding the trial of Bishop Bīshūy.
