In a phone call to Pope Shenouda III, President Muhammad Husnī Mubārak denounced the terrorist group al-Qā‘idah’s threats targeting Egyptian churches and Christians. The Azhar, the Ministry of Endowments, and many other religious organizations and leaders also denounced the threats and called them un-Islamic. Various Islamic scholars agreed that it is Muslims’ religious duty to defend churches.
