Everytime there is a political, religious, or economic crisis, some nonsense emerges that many believe to be a miracle, despite their knowledge that the age of miracles is over for good.
I was not surprised when some devotees of Imām Al-Husayn announced that he had appeared before his mosque, nor when a rumor circulated a few days later that the Virgin Mary had appeared at the al-Warrāq Church.
It is noteworthy that such rumors followed immediately after the political lapse known as the elections for the People's Assembly.
If the propagation of reports of the appearance of holy figures relieves the psychological pressure on millions of people, then God help this downtrodden people who are looking for a magic solution to all its problems.
The appearance of the Virgin will not solve the nation's crisis, nor will the manifestation of Al-Husayn restore dignity to its citizens. On the contrary, perhaps it is the fact that many continue to believe in such miracles that will lead to further social, political, and economic defeats.
