Coptic interest in politics stood at 10% before the 1952 revolution. After the revolution, Muslim and Christian political elites disappeared and a middle class of Egyptians emerged.

The parliament of 1979 mandated that the president should appoint 10 Coptic parliamentary members (from a total of 360 members at the time). The Copts who were assigned as parliament representatives were both old and new technocrats and bureaucrats.
