Al-Misrī al-Yawm reports on Thursday that many Azhar scholars say Islamic Sharī‘ah not only guarantees the right of individuals and groups to express their opinions, but that the recent opposition demonstrations in Egypt fall within that context.

According to Shaykh Jamāl Quṭb, former head of the Azhar Fatwá Committee, “Islamic Sharī‘ah exceeds human rights laws in that respect. It gives the individual, whatever his religion or color the complete right to express his will and opinion, and to have his voice heard by officials.”
