Bishop Marqus of Shubrā al-Khaymah, a member of the Coptic Orthodox Church Holy Synod’s media committee, said acting patriarch Bishop Pachomius has instructed him to make an official statement regarding a memo received from men of law on the Millī Council pertaining to the constitution panel.
Dr. Georgette Qillīnī, a member of the Millī Council, said the council will meet today to discuss this issue and refer the findings of the meeting to the Holy Synod to take a final decision.
Qillīnī, a former member of parliament, criticized the lineup of the constituent assembly, which, she said, was formed “on sectarian, not national, grounds”.
“Article 60 of the Constitutional Declaration clearly indicated that the People’s Assembly and Shūrá Council may elect members of the constituent assembly. The parliament should have adopted a neutral stance,” she said. [‘Imād Khalīl, al-Misrī al-Yawm, April 1, p. 4] Read original text in Arabic
