Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter met on Thursday (May 24) with Grand Shaykh of the Azhar Dr. Ahmad al-Tayīb and leaders of the different Christian denominations in Egypt at the Azhar’s headquarters and Saint Mark Cathedral in the district of al-‘Abbāssīyah separately.
Emerging from a meeting with Tayīb, Carter said his association monitored more than 90 voting processes worldwide, most important of which is the Egyptian presidential elections that was, he said, marked by transparency, fairness and massive turnout.
Carter said Mubārak was responding more than necessary to the requests of the United States and Israel, adding he hopes Egypt’s next president will be fair towards the a suffering Palestinian people.
The former U.S. president attributed the Israeli haughtiness to America’s outright support for Israel, a matter that tarnished its image and credibility all over the world. [Ahmad al-Buhayrī and ‘Imād Khalīl, al-Misrī al-Yawm, May 25, p. 6] Read original text in Arabic
