Coptic and Sufi activists who attended the conference, titled “One Voice for All of Egypt...A Message to All Officials,” lashed out at statements by Dr. Yāsir Burhāmī, the deputy chairman of the Salafī Da’wah (Call) and a member of the constitution-drafting committee, in which he rejected the appointment of Copts or women as vice-presidents on the grounds that it is forbidden in Islam.
The conferees called on the Egyptian people to reject the constituent assembly, asserting that the panel does not represent all segments of Egyptians.
“Our conference is a Sufi-Coptic rally of protest that welcomes each and every moderate Egyptian to object the Islamist domination over the constitution and to refuse the defiance of the judicial power and law,” said the fledgling league secretary general, Counselor Amīr Ramzī.
Muhammad Abū Hāmid, a former member of the dissolved People’s Assembly, said it is a precedent that the president has issued a decision assaulting the judicial power and court rulings, adding the president, as a public employee, must be sacked.
