Grand Shaykh of the Azhar Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyīb congratulated members of the Azhar's Islamic Research Academy on the enactment of the new law regulating the top Sunni Muslim establishment's affairs, known in the media as the Azhar independence law, issued hours before the People's Assembly session amidst rejection by the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) and the Salafī al-Nūr (Light) Party.

Tayyīb started his meeting with the academy members on Thursday (January 26) by reciting the amended items, endorsed by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) and later published in the official gazette. [Khālid Mūsá, al-Shurūq al-Jadīd, Jan. 27, p. 3]
