President Muhammad Mursī addressed the people of Egypt in a speech in which he expressed his grief at the loss of innocent lives in the clashes which have taken place over the last two days. He emphasised that he has a duty to all Egyptians, regardless of their political affiliation or religion, and called for wisdom and tranquillity, saying that the interests of Egypt and the will of its people will not be achieved through violence. He explained that his controversial Constitutional declaration was only intended to end the transitional period and lead to the referendum on the draft Constitution, where people could make their opinion heard.  He said that he would not misuse individual authority in the affairs of the state, insisting that the people would always have the last word.
