A senior official has revealed that the apology of Counselor Mahmūd Mikī, the former Vice President of Egypt who announced his resignation on December 12, 2012, for not taking the position of ambassador to the Vatican has put President Mursī and his Presidency in a critical political position.
The source told al-Misrī al-Yawm that the Presidency had not informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mikī’s decision until two weeks after Mikī told the President. This indicates that no new names were put forward to fill the position, which has been vacant for months.
The source revealed that Mikī’s brother and Minister of Justice Ahmad Mikī, described one of the reasons behind Mikī’s decision. When President Mursī appointed the former Public Prosecutor ‘Abd al-Mijīd Mahmūd as ambassador to the Vatican, this was meant as an insult. Now suddenly, in appointing Mikī, President Mursī speaks of it being an honorable and rewarding position (Tāriq Amīn, al-Misrī al-Yawm, Mar. 17, p. 1). Read original text in Arabic.
