Rev. Dr. Andrea Zakī, deputy head of the Coptic Evangelical Church and head of the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services (CEOSS), advocates abolishing the religious category on the national ID card as a way of confirming the Egyptian identity and avoiding religious division. The comments were made at an Evangelical conference called "Egyptian identity between the nation and the sacred". The aim of the conference was to find ways of understanding between the mosque and the church in order to increase acceptance and tolerance of each other, including religious dialogue between the Church and the Azhar. He also called for both churches and mosques to be supervised by the Azhar and Ministry of Religious Endowments (Awqāf or Awkaf) to devote prayers to religious peace and unity (John ‘Abd al-Malāk, al-Misrīyūn, Mar. 24, p. 3).
