The request highlighted the weakness of the President, and questioned the sincerity of his promise to be a President for all Egyptians. The request, made in response to a statement from the Assistant to President of Egypt on Foreign Relations, Dr ‘Issām al-Haddād, implying Coptic responsibility for recent sectarian strife. Members of the conference also called for the dismissal of the Minister of the Interior, Major General Muhammad Ibrāhīm. An assistant to the Minister of the Interior offered a formal apology for the arrival of tear gas in the Cathedral. However discussions between Coptic members of the Shūrá Council and the representative of the Ministry of the Interior, descended to insults and almost to blows after the Ministry of the Interior were accused of collusion with the attacks on the Cathedral. In Khusūs, the death toll reached seven, as a reconciliation session was held. The Governor, heads of security departments and representatives attended the conference, as well as representatives from the Mosque and Church (Author not mentioned, al-Watan, Apr. 12, p. 1).
