Bishop Mūsá of Youth has held up the Muslims of Khusūs who defended the church from rampaging gangs as showing the true meaning or religion to deviants who abuse it. These comments were made as security and religious leaders met with established families of Khusūs to account faults and demand the application of the law. Member of Parliament Marian Malāk, also present at the meeting, said that he was there to present condolences, appeal for calm and to monitor the return to normal life in the town. In further comments he said that the attacks were a form of collective punishment of the minority for the problems of Egypt, claiming that as soon as a problem occurs some people immediately blame the church. The lack of trials and criminal investigations into events such as those in Khusūs or the massacre at Maspero building facilitates their re-occurrence. He concluded his remarks to the press saying that if there was a sufficiently harsh deterrent (i.e. legal punishment) these attacks would happen far less (Yūsuf Sha’bān and Peter Majdī, al-Tahrīr, Apr. 12, p. 5).
