The Palestinian and Syrian case topped the meetings of the Azhar, Coptic Orthodox Pope, Palestinian President, and Iranian Foreign Minister.
Dr. Ahmad al-Tayyīb said that Jerusalem is not only an occupied land but an Islamic and Christian sanctuary. He added that the Palestinian case is not only a national case but also an Islamic one. That came during the Palestinian President, and the delegation accompanying him, visit to Cairo.
Furthermore, the Palestinian President Mahmūd ‘Abbās said, during a press conference, that the Azhar has a historical role in defending Islamic cases, especially Jerusalem.
Al-Tayyīb, called the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi to give the people of Sunnah their full rights in Iran. That came during their meeting in the Grand Shaykh’s office.
Coptic Orthodox Pope Tawadros II welcomed ‘Abbās at the Coptic Orthodox Church headquarters. ‘Abbās stressed that he visits the Pope every time he is in Cairo and he greeted the Pope for his consecration, the New Year, and Christmas.
The Pope also met the Iranian Foreign Minister in an unprecedented meeting between both parties. The meeting took place on January 10 at the Coptic Orthodox Cathedral in al-‘Abbāsīyah. Salehi thanked the Pope in a Press Conference afterwards for welcoming him in the Cathedral and expressed his hopes for Copts to live in peace with Muslims (Husnī Mīlād, Dīyā’ Abū al-Safā and Marco ‘Adil, al-Akhbār, Jan. 11, p. 5).
