According to Dr. Mīnā Badī’ ‘Abd al-Malik, Professor at the American University and Coptic researcher, the involvement of the Coptic Orthodox Church helped to resolve conflicts between Egypt and Ethiopia in the past. He added that the use of the Nile water is regulated through five contracts signed within the last century.
The deeply embedded religious relationship between the Coptic Orthodox Church and Ethiopian Orthodox Church traces back to the first half of the 4th century AD. The church of Alexandria is seen as the mother of the Ethiopian Church. The two churches separated in 1959, after which the influence of the Coptic Orthodox Church on the Ethiopian decreased. However, we cannot deny the important role the two churches played in former negotiations about the Nile water between Egypt and Ethiopia in the past. So maybe there is a chance that the churches help to resolve the water crisis one more time (Majdī Fikrī, al-Dustūr, May 31, p. 6). Read original text in Arabic.
