During the first meeting led by Pope Tawadros II after his enthronement last November, a preliminary draft bylaw on monasticism was completed. The meeting was attended by 70 bishops, abbots, and monks.

According to al-Watan newspaper, the preliminary draft introduces regulations on several aspects of monastic life, such as the selection of monks, the promotion of their spiritual growth, maturity, their administration skills in leading the monastery, as well as regulations on erecting new monasteries. On the educational level, diocesan pastoral care will be added to the traditional monastic studies. The diocesan pastoral care program includes scientific research, monastic and pastoral services, and sermon studies. The draft includes the requirement needed for nominating a monk, as well as for his disqualification.

In another context, Coptic activists and public figures released a statement on their rejection of allocating a Coptic quota for parliamentary seats. Upholding to Egypt’s religious and cultural diversity, the signatories fear that the quota could create a state of "creeds and beliefs" that scorns the principle of citizenship. The statement was signed by former state minister of tourism Munīr Fakhrī 'Abd al-Nūr, former vice-president Samir Marcos (Samīr Marqus), the political activist George Ishāq, member of the dissolved Parliament Dr. 'Imād Jād, the Coptic businessman Kamāl Zākhir, the political analyst Sāmih Fawzī, Deputy Head of the Egyptian Social Democratic Party Hannā Greis, and Ihāb al-Kharrāt (Mustafá Rahūmah, al-Watan, Jan. 17, p.3).
