The Grand Shaykh of the Azhar, Shaykh Ahmad al-Tayyīb, announced his disapproval of the bloodshed and deaths that occurred yesterday (July 27) in Nasr City, Cairo. He asked the interim government for an immediate investigation into the circumstances and truths behind the events which led to dozens of deaths and hundreds of casualties. He said that his heart was broken by the blood spilled on Egyptian soil and that the Azhar strongly condemns the number of victims, he added that the Azhar still adheres to the principle that violent resistance is unlawful and that human rights and life must be respected.
Dr. Shawqī 'Allām, Muftī of the Republic, also condemned yesterday's acts of violence and asked for an independent judicial investigation to be opened immediately, and appealed for restraint and a lack of violence from all sides (Ahmad al-Bihayrī, al-Misrī al-Yawm, July 28, p. 6).
