The American-Human Rights Watch (HRW) reported that Christian Egyptians were being targeted in several attacks since the overthrow of former President Muhammad Mursī.
HRW pointed out that the authorities are obliged to investigate those attacks immediately, to punish the perpetrators and to reveal police efforts to stop violence.
Nadim Houry, HRW's deputy director of Middle East and North Africa division, and director of Beirut office, said that Egyptian Security Forces should be on high alert to stop sectarian violence in the currently tensed and polarized situation in Egypt. Also, the religious and political leaders have to pull out from that dangerous escalation.
HRW added that since the downfall of Mursī on July 3, not less then six attacks on Christians have occurred in governorates all over Egypt. Security forces had failed to adopt the necessary measures to counter the violence (Du'ā’ al-Sayyīd, al-Dustūr, July 24, p. 3). The article has no link online.
