In his latest video, the leader of Al-Qaeda (al-qāʿidah), Āyman al-Zawāhirī, criticized state institutions and accused the U.S. of organizing Morsi's overthrow. He stated that the Crusaders, the secularists, the army, the remnants of Hosni Mubarak's previous regime, and a group of belonging to Islamic groups funded by the Gulf states but managed through the U.S, are the parties responsible for orchestrating Morsi’s overthrow.
Āyman Al-Zawāhirī attacked Coptic Pope Tawadros and Copts saying that they want to create a Coptic state in the South of Egypt. He added that the Copts do not want anyone apart from a secularist allied to the Americans and Zionists to rule Egypt, in order to resume their plan of partitioning Egypt.
Al-Zawāhirī confirmed that what happened to the MB is proof that democracy failed to bring Islamists to power. He sent a letter to Morsi's supporters stating that legitimacy is not through elections and democracy, but through Islamic sharī'ah. Denying that what is happening in Egypt is a political conflict, he described the events in Egypt as an “Islamic vs. Secular/Crusader” conflict (Islām Jamāl, al-Yawm al-Sābi', Aug. 3).
