The legal committee for amending the Constitution (The Committee of Experts) continued its third week of work. The Coptic Organizations Advisory Council's proposals showed support for the text of Article 3, which states that Islam is the state religion, Arabic is the official language, and the principles of sharī'ah (Islamic Law) are the main source of legislation. It inserted amendments to Article 4 supporting al-Azhar's role as a source of Islamic science and knowledge and in defending moderate and liberal Islam worldwide. The Coptic Committee proposed the addition of a sixth article which would not forbid the creation of political parties based on religious, military, or racial foundations.
In the executive branch, Coptic organizations demanded that, as in the U.S., the Vice President of the Republic should be elected or that the President should appoint the Vice President after he has taken office. It also wants the Shūrá Council to be abolished. Coptic organizations also demanded the abolition of the National Councils as their functions overlap with the functions and powers of the ministries.
In the judicial branch, it reiterated the importance of the autonomy of the judiciary and the re-consideration of the appointments of the members of the Supreme Constitutional Court. It also demanded that the Supreme Constitutional Court resumes its a posteriori oversight of the Constitution. The Coptic organizations confirmed the necessity of redrafting the articles which confirm the separation of powers and ensure that one power will not seize power from another (Nūr 'Alī, Nūrā Fakhrī, and Nurmīn 'Abd al-Thāhir, al-Yawm al-Sābi’, Aug. 3).
