The prosecution’s investigations ended with the identification of the main suspect in the riots which took place on August 14 in Asyut. The city witnessed escalated violence following the dispersal of sit-ins in Cairo and Giza, which led to the burning of facilities including several shops, St. George (Mār Jirjis) church, and Ibrāhīm Pasha police station.  They stated that the defendant played a main role in the riot and the church burning and was imprisoned for 15 days pending investigations.
