Today (September 1), The National Council for Human Rights held its first session after its formation. Muhamad Faīq, President of the council said that he received several ideas from the members in the past few days to set the council’s agenda. Among the suggestions is to form a fact-finding committee to unveil the truth about what happened after the 30th of June including the events of Rāba’ah, Nahdah, and Kirdāsah and the torching the churches in Upper Egypt.

Faīq affirmed their concern about the practice of torture which became widespread in the last period, taking into serious consideration the situation of prisons, especially after the 30th of June when many were arrested.  Nāsir Amīn, member of the council, stressed the importance of putting an end to the random arrests of innocent people. “This will be possible with the quick formation of a rapid response work group and a judicial and security commission where everyone can complain against random arrests” (Yūsuf Shaʿbān and Bītor Majdī, al-Tahrīr, Sept. 1, p. 3).
