The song, “We are the people, you are the people,” by the singer 'Alī al-Hagār provoked a wave of criticism and polarization between supporters and opponents of Morsi. Attempts were made to declare the singer an infidel. Now the singer responds, “The last song that I sang after the incidents in Egypt's streets had no intention towards the Brotherhood and the Salafists. In fact its intention was towards the terrorists who terrorize the society and stir up violence in Egypt.” In his statement he explained, “In my family are people who belong to the Brotherhood or to the Salafists, just as in any family in Egypt.” None of them wanted to label him as an infidel after he released that song. He said that he had also friends who belong to that stream. He further pointed out that the Azhar has accredited him a reciter of the Holy Qur'ān seven years ago.

Countering accusations that his song called for division and exclusion he said, “This is merely defamation. The song calls up to counter terrorism thatuses religion as a cloak” (Muhammad Ismā'īl, al-Dustūr, Sept. 11, p. 16). Read original text in Arabic.
