The Constituent Assembly has decided to adjourn the discussion on Article 219 (explaining Article II referring to the principles of sharī’ah).  There is a general leaning in the assembly to delete the article and include a reference in the preamble of the Constitution stating that the “principles of Islamic sharī’ah are the main source of legislation and that these principles are decisively permanent and significant. The legislature should adhere to the rules and protect the sharī’ah causes.” However, this suggestion was not discussed due to the prolonging of the meeting until a late hour (Muhamad Hamdī, al-Akhbar, Nov. 5, p. 3). Read the original text in Arabic.
