A further reason for the concern of the Azhar is that its message of moderation to the Muslim world is at stake by an ultra-conservatism, which Salafists and Muslim Brotherhood adopt. In addition, Dr. al-Tayīb had asked the Prime Minister, Hishām Qandīl, to appoint new deputies for the Azhar University, however, delaying their appointments is a further concern raised, the source said.
The source also stated that the Muslim Brotherhood are pressing Al-Tayīb to appoint some of their members in the Azhar Senior Scholars, something which the Grand Shaykh totally rejects.
The Muslim Brotherhood had, further, harshly attacked Dr. Al-Tayīb after he had rejected the bill the Muslim Brotherhood had drafted for selling Islamic bonds.
The chairman of the independent Imāms union Muhammad Al-Bastawīsī said that the Imāms are being replaced by the Muslim Brotherhood. ”They are appointed on the basis of favoritism and not efficiency,” Al-Bastawīsī said.
