The seven Egyptian defendants are the lawyer and founder of the Washington-based National Coptic Assembly Maurice Sādiq, the presenter of a religious program in the United States of America Marqus 'Azīz,  the media coordinator of the same Nabīl Adīb, the physician Fikrī 'Abd al-'Azīz,  Nakoula Basseley Nakoula,  Nāhid Mahmūd (a woman who converted to Christianity) and Nādir Farīd. The eighth defendant is the American Pastor Terry Jones who serves a parish in the state of Florida. The latter had his sentence reduced to five years in jail. It is reported that the eight defendants had disclosed a declaration that has called for an independent Coptic state and of seeking to divide Egypt and incite sedition. Guilty of harming national unity, insulting and publicly attacking Islam, and spreading false information are all charges that carry the death sentence.
