Shaykh Ahmad al-Tayyib highly welcomed a Saudi initiative to restore the prestige of al-Azhar and its bodies by large moral and material support. Saudi Arabia appreciated al-Azhar’s important role to spread moderate views and to confront extremist ideas of terrorist groups like ISIS that exploit Islam. In this context, ‘Abd Allah al-Najār, member of the Society of Islamic Research, said that Arab states now understand that they cannot confront extremism without al-Azhar.
