Amnesty International: Egyptian officials deceive the world by calling to respect human rights
Nicolas Piauchaud, Director of Amnesty International’s human rights campaign in Egypt, criticised Egyptian officials for advocating respect for human rights during the UN General Assembly. In regards to the killing of the activist Shīmā‘ al-Sabāgh two months ago by the regime and the Egyptian government’s on-going denial on that matter, the propagation of human rights by the Egyptian regime as well as a lack of criticism from the part of the international community seems hypocritical. AI criticises the Egyptian government and the international community for not taking the situation seriously, pointing to the fact that issue was not raised at all during the recent International Conference for Economic Development in Sharm al-Sheikh. The critique goes on to point out the resemblance between the recent events in Egypt and the Green Revolution in Iran in 2009, during which several activists were killed by the Iranian regime and were condemned by the international community. Bishu concludes that long-term stability in Egypt can only occur if human rights are respected.
