Dear Arab-West Report Newsletter readers,
As so many organizations we are going through very tough times with the coronavirus crisis. In the past quarter we wrote several newsletters about the consequences. Staff is working from home, income is insecure. In such a period we need to be able to show donor organizations that people are interested in our work. Please ask your friends to sign up for our newsletters. You can choose between the regular newsletters (around 50 per year) and the quarterly. Any subscription is support to us.
I am very pleased with the excellent student participation in our webinar on dialogue, June 22-24. Three of our newsletters give you an insight into what we have discussed. We are living in a diverse world and have to be able to communicate well with people with different cultures and religions.

15) The victims of COVID-19 in Egypt

Millions of Egyptians and migrant workers from Africa and Asia have lost their jobs due to the coronavirus crisis. These are people working in cleaning, domestic work, day-workers, sales clerks, waiters, kitchen staff, baggage handlers and many others. This spells catastrophe for millions of families since social services for these people are mostly lacking.

16) Resilience: Our student interns launch the CAWU Ambassador for Dialogue program

French intern Clément Ethore took the lead in developing a CAWU (Center for Arab-West Understanding) Ambassador for Dialogue program. This program is a message of hope in times of great insecurity because of the coronavirus crisis. It is also a message of enlightenment and showing students taking responsibility to take this message of hope further.

17) From a sterile Easter to a sterile Ramadan

The current celebrations feel sterile but we have no choice. In times of pandemics people needs to stay at home as much as possible, and we hope that next year's Holy Week and Ramadan, our rituals will be treasured again with our families and friends.

CAWU has been organizing summer schools in 2018 and 2019. We were planning to do so as well in 2020 but the covid-19 virus changed our plans into a summer webinar. The title for this year’s summer school/webinar is: Muslims and Christians contributing to building up the future of Egyptian society.

We are starting with a discussion about the lessons of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali [Abū Ḥāmid al-Ghazālī] (c.1058-1111) about dialogue with people with different views from ours. Our intern Gurjinder Khambay interviewed Dutch Arabist Eildert Mulder, and he gave us a fantastic insight in the views of this scholar.

23) Christian Islam expert Dr Jan Slomp: do not mix religion with ideological thinking

On the first day of our webinar we listened to an interview with Dr. Jan Slomp (88), secretary and chairman of the Islam in Europe Committee of the Conferences of European Churches between 1978 and 1994 and advisor to this Committee between 1994 and 1997 has been for decades a major partner in Christian-Muslim dialogue in various levels.

25) Egypt has been deeply affected by the covid-19 crisis

The covid-19 crisis has not only resulted in deaths, broken families and a shortage of intensive care beds but has also resulted in the loss of income of millions of Egyptians with increasing high prices of necessities which is bound to increase poverty and have social consequences.

The database also contains articles with editorial analysis and interviews on the subject.
