Cairo is a large metropolis of eight million people, so it is not only the largest city in Egypt, but also the largest city in Africa and the Arab world. "Greater Cairo" encompasses the city of Cairo and adjacent Giza. The river Nile, one of the largest in the world, lies between the two cities. To the north, Greater Cairo also encompasses Qalyubiya (Shubra al-Khayma is situated here) and to the south Helwan. To the West it includes 6th October City and to the East it includes Obour City. Together some 25 million people are living in this metropolis, 25% of Egypt’s total population.
I came through AIESEC Ain Shams University, an international non-governmental organization that focuses on empowering young people to make a positive impact on society. I was part of the Startup Unicorns Project (SUP), a global, certified, six-week internship for international professionals and students in leading Egyptian startups.
I studied psychology and theology but decided to specialize in human resources from a more psychological angle to help provide satisfaction and achievement for the people involved in the organization and garner an understanding of the workflow of business to business.
AIESEC introduced me to Arab-West Report, an independent e-magazine based in Cairo which has a council of advisors composed of Egyptian, Christian, and Muslim experts, as well as non-Egyptian specialists. The journal features systematic reviews of Egyptian Arabic language media on issues related to Muslim – Christian relations. This has expanded to include Arab - West relations since these are often polluted due to misrepresentations in Western media about the role of religion in Egyptian society.
Co-founder and editor in chief of Arab-West Report, Cornelis Hulsman is a Dutch sociologist and a specialist in Egyptian print media, the tradition of the Coptic Orthodox Holy Family tradition, interreligious relations in Egyptian society, and intercultural understanding in the Arab world. He has over the years documented Arab-Western and Muslim-Christian relations from a media perspective.
